What is EarthAudit?
In this century, we face daunting environmental challenges. We must plan renewable energy projects, ensure agricultural food security, avoid and adapt to climate change, while safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services. To succeed, we must keep a watchful eye on environmental assets tied to the Earth’s land surface. Each individual parcel of land is an account that supports these assets. Land can alternatively grow crops or bio fuels, harvest rain, wind, or sun for electricity, store carbon, or harbor biodiversity. Functioning markets rely on reliable, up to date information.
We propose EarthAudit – a dynamic, interactive website to monitor the Earth’s environmental accounts and assets to guide sensible land use decisions and investments. EarthAudit is a constantly updating, scalable engine that inputs freely available data sets from a variety of partner web-portals, applies scientific algorithms to produce useful content from these data, and uses Google Maps and Web2.0 technology to visualize these products.
EarthAudit was founded by Scott Loarie and Lucas Joppa.
